Merlin Entertainments: Pushing The Boundaries of Sustainable Architecture in The Themed Environment
Tiger Rock 1f.jpg

A dissertation paper focused around the improvement across the Merlin Entertainments portfolio of themed attractions towards sustainable design through two of their most recent attractions; Tiger Rock at Chessington World of Adventures and Wicker Man at Alton Towers Resort. The paper seeks to determine the way in which the entertainments industry needs to move towards a more sustainable culture along with how it already is striving to do so as both an economic venture and aiming to be more conscious of the environment.

The paper looks in depth at both projects and the way in which the design produces sustainable outcomes that have not been done before in the UK as well as drawing comparisons from projects from major competitors such as Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Themed entertainment is something I am particularly interested in as I feel it is an area of the architectural practice that is constantly overlooked due to the negative stigma of the consumerism surrounding the industry. My final year dissertation begins to break down the negative barriers and attempts to show a different side to the industry in the UK.

Will Merlin Entertainments be able to reproduce projects that create a public respect for sustainable attitude as well as ensuring that financial stability and growth is achieved? Download the file in the top right to find out more.
